Simulation of hemispherical transducers for transcranial HIFU treatments using the hybrid angular spectrum approach

چکیده
Background/introduction Transcranial focused ultrasound is emerging as a promising treatment modality for a variety of disorders including essential tremor and glioblastoma. However, traditional full-wave methods of simulating ultrasound pressure fields for these treatments, such as FDTD, are computationally intensive. The situation is exacerbated by the large area insonified by the transcranial transducers, which are typically hemispherical to spread the intensity over a large area of the skull and prevent burns. The Hybrid Angular Spectrum (HAS) approach [1] has been used to rapidly model ultrasonic beam propagation. Here we present a method for adapting the HAS technique to hemispherical transducers.

Simulation of transrib HIFU propagation and the strategy of phased-array activation
Liver ablation is challenging in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) because of the presence of ribs and great inhomogeneity in multi-layer tissue. In this study, angular spectrum approach (ASA) has been used in the wave propagation from phased-array HIFU transducer, and diffraction, attenuation and the nonlinearity are accounted for by means of second order operator splitting method. Bioh...

BACKGROUND Non-invasive high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can be used to treat a variety of disorders, including those in the brain. However, the differences in acoustic properties between the skull and the surrounding soft tissue cause aberrations in the path of the ultrasonic beam, hindering or preventing treatment. METHODS We present a method for correcting these aberrations that is...

Introduction: High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a technique currently used for different medical treatments such as thermal ablation, hyperthermia, and bleeding control [1]. This kind of technique is based on the use of an acoustic transducer with a concave face used to focus the ultrasound energy in a specific zone (Figure 1). The acoustic field characterization in transducers is imp...
